General Questions About MUN

Model United Nations (MUN) is an educational simulation where students represent different countries and engage in debates, negotiations, and decision-making to solve global issues. Participants act as delegates of their assigned countries in various UN committees, following diplomatic rules and procedures to draft resolutions addressing specific topics.

MUN is open to students of all ages, from middle school to university level. BILSEMMUN welcomes both beginners and experienced delegates. We have committees designed for different experience levels - from beginner-friendly to advanced.

MUN helps students develop essential skills including:

  • Public Speaking - Present ideas confidently in front of an audience
  • Negotiation & Diplomacy - Build consensus and resolve conflicts
  • Research & Analysis - Investigate complex global issues
  • Critical Thinking - Evaluate arguments and form positions
  • Teamwork - Collaborate with others to draft solutions
  • Leadership - Guide discussions and influence outcomes

A typical MUN conference involves several stages:

  1. Opening Ceremonies: Introduction to the conference with keynote speeches
  2. Opening Speeches: Delegates present their country's position
  3. Debate: Delegates discuss, propose, and amend solutions
  4. Caucusing: Informal meetings for negotiations and drafting resolutions
  5. Resolution Voting: Delegates vote on proposed solutions
  6. Closing Ceremonies: Awards ceremony and conference conclusion

Rules of Procedure outline how debate is conducted. They specify how delegates speak, introduce motions, ask questions, and vote on resolutions. Key elements include:

  • Points: Point of Information, Point of Order, Point of Personal Privilege
  • Motions: Motion to Open Debate, Motion for Moderated/Unmoderated Caucus
  • Voting Procedures: Simple majority, two-thirds majority, consensus

BILSEMMUN will provide a detailed Rules of Procedure guide to all delegates before the conference.

BILSEMMUN recognizes outstanding delegates with the following awards:

  • Best Delegate: The most outstanding delegate in a committee
  • Outstanding Delegate: Delegates who significantly contributed to debate
  • Honorable Mention: Delegates who performed exceptionally well
